Dan & Jason Klingler, 1988 Thanksgiving Day
I'll never forget it, you know, it was a sunny Thanksgiving Day in Chicago, 1988.
Dan had his hockey stick, hoping beyond hope that the Blackhawks would pull out of their horrible losing streak.
Jason had his hair all punked out looking stylish as always.

LaVerne & Art Puhr with Jason & Dan Klingler - Milwaukee
On our way home from Baraboo, Wisconsin, we stopped to see the botanical gardens just outside of Milwaukee.
In this picture, Jason Klingler is standing between Grandma LaVerne Puhr and Grandpa Art Puhr. Dan Klingler is starting to practice his Invisible Man approach to life. Dan really is in this photo - but you may have to look hard to find him.

Dan has re-appeared and decided to take a look around before heading back to Chicago.

Jason Klingler at Circus World, Baraboo, WI, August 1977
We spent a day at Circus World at Baraboo, Wisconsin which is directly on the Baraboo River. Circus World has been around since 1959, and was still going moderately strong. Animal rights activists have managed to eliminate many fun animals from today's circus, but back in 1977 they were just getting started and pachyderm were still providing entertainment for children and adults alike:
The crowd was additionally awed and delighted by a woman hanging by her hair, high up in the Big-Top and spinning around like a Whirling Dervish while spinning hoops. She didn't even use a safety net. Ah, the good old days when the circus was really fun:
Well, perhaps not fun for everyone. Jason Klingler did not have his happy face on when we put him in the cage to take this picture:
Jason's look is one of controlled panic - but right on the verge of totally losing it.
Now what should have calmed Jay down? One might think a fun walk through the petting zoo would do the trick. No scary gorillas roaming around there, right? Well it was obvious that Jay had never read how close Esmeralda was to her goat in the Hunchback of Notre Dame:
I think this turned out to be a traumatic day for Jason who to this day has a terrible fear of the circus....and goats.

Dan Klingler, who was only four months old, just kind of slept through the entire day.

In contrast to "Esmeralda and the Goat, Djali", 1865, by Antonio G. Rossetti, we have "Jason and the Goat", a picture by Walter Klingler:

We are off to visit the Wisconsin Dells
The next day we head off the the Dells which got its name from a scenic, glacially formed forge that has striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River.
We enjoyed a nice boat ride along the banks and had wonderful views of the formations.
If you look closely at the image on the right, you'll see some stupid dog jumping between rock formations.
I have no recollection if this was a planned amusement or if I just happened to catch it while taking a picture.
As usual, Dan was not impressed and just wanted to get back to civilization.

August 1977 vacation. First stop: Okee, Wisconsin
In August, 1977, the Puhrs and Klinglers take off for a vacation from Chicago and head for Okee, Wisconsin where we rented 2 cottages. We plan on using this location as home base so we can see the Wisconsin Dells and Circus World.
The cottages were comfortable and basic. We spent the first day hanging around the cabin and enjoying the country.
Jay was three years old.
Yes, indeed, Jason was out like a light, sucking his thumb and wrapped in his ba-ba.
Dan, on the other hand, was quite awake and wondering what the hell was going on.
I'm in the country!
HELP!
Dan is 4 months old and prefers city life.
Tomorrow we head for the Wisconsin Dells.
